The purpose of the Educational Seminar is to empower rural communities with knowledge, practical skills, and opportunities that promote increased fish consumption as a pathway to improved nutrition, enhanced livelihoods, and sustainable socio-economic development.
The seminar serves as a targeted intervention to address low fish consumption levels, particularly in low fish consuming regions by creating awareness of the nutritional benefits of fish and equipping participants with hands-on skills in fish preparation and handling. By demystifying the process of cleaning, cooking, and incorporating fish into everyday meals, the seminar aims to eliminate fear and uncertainty that often hinder consumption.
In addition, the seminar seeks to:
-
Promote fish as an accessible, affordable, and nutritious food source for households;
-
Provide practical training in fish preparation techniques, enabling participants to confidently prepare fish at home;
-
Encourage behavioural change by fostering a culture of fish consumption within communities;
-
Highlight entrepreneurship opportunities within the fish value chain, particularly for youth, women, and local businesses; and
-
Support national development objectives related to improved public health, food security, and poverty reduction.
Ultimately, the seminar is designed not only to educate, but also to inspire communities to embrace fish as both a dietary staple and an economic opportunity, contributing to the broader vision of making fish a central part of everyday life in Namibia.
